How about a better 'intermediary' system...
Let me explain-
Rather than maybe being able to play multiple framerates in a
sequence, I would at least like to be able to do some quick-
converting, maybe between projects. For example, we often work in two
frame rates - 23.98 and 59.94, or 24 and 59.94, and I need to pull
stuff from one (big) project into the other - without having to go out
to tape and back in to the avid (which is the 'right' way to do it.)
So, for offline, I make a reference QT of the 24, lets say, then
switch to the 59.94, and import just the shot I need. This is
cumbersome, but faster than going out to tape. Then, once we're
'locked' I can go back, make a sequence of just the shots I used,
bounce them out to tape, change the playback rate on the tape (so the
deck adds 3:2) and pull them back into Avid. I suppose the 'tape'
could also be, like after effects or something, but tape seems to work
the fastest.
Wouldn't it be nice if Avid added 3:2 on the import and made 29.97,
instead of just repeating every 5th frame or so? (I mean, you know, a
window that was like 'hey, this clip is 24 fps, do you want me to make
it 23.98 with a pulldown, or import it 1:1 (so it plays faster?) That
would be cool. I realize this is complex, but isn't that the kind of
thing Avid's good at? Seems like keeping track of the original
metadata is a bigger hassle than just getting the import right.
Just an idea.
