The rumors are true. Though my official start date is 5/1, I'm trying
to get up to speed as much as I can before then. I'm really excited
about this new position. I'm going to ask for to officially
have 2.0 DX appended to my title.
It can't be good karma to participate in a thread declaring one's own
demise, and for obvious reasons I don't think RIPs are in order.
Someone noted that I might be among the higher ranking folks at Avid
to have recently used Avid's products to make a living. I'm not sure
that's true. I think just as importantly, I have used the
competition's tools profitably.
Obviously the style of my participation in public forums will
change. Avid is a publicly traded company - what is said about Avid
and its competitors by its employees can have serious consequences.
And it's just not appropriate to play the shock jock role from the
inside. There's a large, acceptable space between "I will pay Pete
Gould to leave the list" and pure corporate weasel-speak. I think
we'll all find a happy compromise.
For most of you - Terry being one notable exception - this move means
you'll be in more, not less, contact with me. (Terry is why voicemail
was invented.) It's my job to talk to you. How cool is that? I used to
do it for fun.
A couple of questions I can answer now. FCP-L will continue. My
participation level will diminish, but I'll still participate more
than anyone from Apple. :) Avid has no problem with me owning FCP-L,
but I will be handing the reigns over to Jim Feeley just the same.
Xprove will continue to operate. It has long outgrown its day to day
need for me anyway. The company has a solid road map for development
for the next 12 months. No one will notice any change. Dan Sharp will
be taking over officially on 5/1, though he's already been running the
operation for a while.
My blogs -- I'll get to them again ASAP. Of course I won't be
commenting as frequently and I won't be discussing rumors about Avid
or its competition. But there's more than enough interesting stuff to
comment on in this space.
I'm really looking forward to getting to work at Avid.
