Friends,
The callous hatred, and fanaticism that we see, even
within our own communities, is a tragic reminder as to
how little we all have learned from the lessons of the
past. The atrocity was more horrific than anything any
of us have experienced, but will it turn us to a
greater sense of humanity, or a diminution of it?
We can send in troops, drop more bombs, cause more
terror... But it is a grave disservice to the memories
of those who died for us to embrace the values of
those who committed this crime. Engaging in their
methods of violence against the innocents, at home and
abroad, diminishes us all.
We Americans have for too long ignored the daily
horrors and injustices in the world, were masses of
people are written off. We ignore the suffering. All
of us.
There is another way.
We must work to create a world were murderous
fanaticism goes wanting adherents. In the end, the
only defense, the only solution, the only reaction of
a just society:
Build a more just world. Find out what's going on and
never ignore the people who we are distant from, but
so completely connected to. From the Chinese workers
in sweat shops, the refugees of the Columbian civil
war, the AIDS victims of Africa, to the forgotten
people within the US. Only justice, freedom, equality,
and solidarity can save us.
