The director's commentary on Brothers McMullen by Ed Burns is so
inspiring. He wrote, directed, produced, and starred in it and the
whole thing only cost $25K. Which went on to make about $10M.

Initially, I thought director's commentary on DVDs were an awesome
supplement to learning filmmaking, but more often than not, they are
talking about how they went to high-school with the extra who is
sitting behind the granny on the 7th table. I don't really care to
know about that. I want to know about directorial choices they made
etc. So, I have to let you know that ABOUT A BOY which is a
terrific film also has one of the best director's commentaries on
it. Check it out to gain more insight into the art of direction
(which seems so enigmatic to many).

Best,

CASTING NY

Karma, Confessions and Holi (registered working Title)

Movie:
Upscale artsy desi (Indian) couple Mira and Dev, going through
marital problems invite friends and family for a weekend get-
together. Everything is okay when these rich and stylish people meet
in the beginning. An incident triggers most drunk attendees to come
out with their secrets that they always kept to themselves. Ghosts
from the past come out of closet - now relationships would never be
same again.. they wake up to noisy holi (festival of color)
celebration - in the masti of holi a lot is forgiven and forgotten..
but maybe not everything! (clearly, I am not giving too much here)

Market:
Cross-over market. Desi too.

About me:
Recently finished my first feature 'Indian Fish' - it world
premiered in NYC on Nov7th, Played in Bombay International Film
festival on Nov21st. Soon to be released in the US. This is my
second feature film project as film maker.

Actors:
Casting is the most challenging aspect as I am planning on doing the
whole project possibly in improv. Although we are going to have a
finished script as a backup plan.

Age groups: Desis - age 30-40 either sex
Few Caucasians - age 30-32. either sex
One oriental girl - age 22-30
One desi girl with desi accent: 19-20
One desi guy : must be 18plus in age (to be legally safe) but has
looks
of a 15 year old nerdy second generation Indian.
Accent : Indian English and little bit of Hindi(not necessary) for
Indians. (few need to have american accent too)
Local : Local to NYC Metro area preferred.
IMPROV is a must
Those who have more time in hand are naturally preferred.
If you don't think you are a good actor please don't apply.

Shooting dates: TBD (as soon as actors are ready to hit the set)

Looking :
to collaborate with Actors, choreographers, writers, musicians,
painters, interior designers, dance troops, singers, editors (fcp),
producers, technical crew, DPs, PR personnel and other aspirants who
might want to get involved.

WRITER'S AGENT INFO

So You Wanna Sell A Script (http://www.soyouwannasellascript.com)

Post:

I received an email from an agent I sent my script to that she was
putting a representation agreement in the mail. That’s all she
wrote, and I never spoke to her (I will call her once the agreement
arrives), so I don't know any specifics at this time.

What would be the terms of a standard agreement? In other words,
what kind of things should I be looking for.

Response:

Look to see how much of a cut she wants. If she's WGA signatory, it
can't be more than 10%. It can be less, but don't count on that.

Look for an out clause. There should be something in the contract
that allows you to leave, no questions asked, if the agent doesn't
get you a paying job within a certain amount of time. There's a
clause like this in my contract, at least; I think it's another WGA
requirement...so, again, if she's not signatory, all bets are off.

There certainly should NOT be anything in there saying the agent
owns or controls the rights to your work. I have no idea if anybody
would try to slip something like that in there, but you never
know...so run away screaming if something like that shows up.

Basically, agent contracts are for the agent's protection, not
yours. They want to make sure they have something in writing because
they want a commission if and when you make a sale or get an
assignment.

This agent is sending you a representation agreement without even
meeting you face to face? Without even a phone conversation?? That
is bizarre. You need to meet with her (if you're out of town, then
you need to come or at least have a long phone chat). You don't want
somebody representing you if you've never even met them. Even if you
think the contract looks okay, I'd strongly suggest you not sign it
until you have at least one good conversation with this agent to
make sure you're on the same page and that she's somebody you think
can help you get where you want to go. Once you sign a contract
giving her the right to represent you, after all, she can call up
everybody from Spielberg on down saying you're her client--you want
somebody who's not annoying, ditzy or otherwise nasty making those
calls, especially if this is your first foray into Hollywood!

Houses" in the re: line)

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

Note: All characters are South Asian, raised in the U.S.

Ashish: early 30's. Unremarkable in appearance. A mechanical
engineer, he is married to Radha. Ashish is unfulfilled in all
areas of his life - marriage, family, work. He was always one of
the last to get picked for the team. Uncomfortable in his own
skin. Chronically nervous and spontaneously irrational.

Radha: late 20s - early 30's. Ashish's wife and mother of their 5
year old son. She could be attractive but she tries too hard not to
be. An intelligent woman educated in the field of psychology, she
was raised in the US but under traditional Indian family influences.
She is very uncomfortable with her own body and sexuality.

Jay: early 30's. Handsome, cocky, relaxed. A successful plastic
surgeon. Jay's mother put her son on a pedestal the day he was born
and he hasn't fallen off since. A magnetic personality and sense of
entitlement toward all things attractive, yet within there may be a
yearning for something deeper.

Annika: 20s. Jay's wife. Beautiful with strong sex appeal.
Sexually confidant and provocative. Grew up priveleged. Smart,
but doesn't know she is. Her outward confidence masks deep
insecurity. Sometimes her youth shows.

SEEKING SUBMISSIONS: DESIPINA & CO., 'SEVEN 11 FRANCHISED'

Desipina & Co. is seeking immediate submissions for 'Seven 11
Franchised', (EQUITY SHOWCASE, approval pending) a follow up to last
year's successful 'Seven 11 Convenience Theatre'. Auditions will be

performances begin April 1, 2004. All rehearsals and performances
will be held at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum Theatre. This
year's collection of plays all probe issues of stereotype,
immigration and assimilation with humor and pathos.

Seeking: 2 South Asian men (20's-30's), 2 South Asian women (20's-
30's), 1 African American man (20's – 30's), 1 Asian man (40's –
50's), 1 Asian man (20's – 30's) and 1 Asian female (20's – 30's).
Actors will form a company that will play at least two roles each in
the seven eleven-minute plays.

Also seeking a Stage Manager, Lightboard operator and Soundboard
operator. There is a small stipend for these positions.

Please mail headshots and resumes, and resumes for crew positions to

Think getting the Oscar is something to joke about with your
friends, well here's the application for submission. So far, I know
of 3 people within my circle of which 2 has won and one is
nominated. Plus, I saw all the Oscar nominated shorts of last year
and 2 out of nine were incredible. The rest were pretty weak and
I've seen better at C-grade festivals.

GO TOUR

"[GoTour] was conceived in order to meet two objectives. First, to
capture the current state of the national independent arts community
and promote its diverse resources. Second, to generate new artistic
and career directions for the community's constituents by providing
a democratic infrastructure that fosters the sharing of local
solutions and developing models to be shared on a national basis."

I found all of the following on GoTour. It seems like it's got
serious potential. Definately spread the word about this one - only
then will it truly come to life.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Hope this mail finds you in good spirits.

I am Rahul Das, a Masters student of Film Direction in
California Institute of the Arts. CalArts is one of
the most reputed schools for film in this country.
It's Film Directing program is highly competitive
enrolling only a handful of very talented filmmakers
across the world. My previous films have been screened
in a variety of internationally acclaimed Film
Festivals.

I am presently involved in shooting my thesis film- a
short film to be shot on 16mm in end February- early
March. This film is a humorous self-reflection about
the romanticized notion of home for an Indian abroad
and his reconciliation in the practicality of life
here. The script has been commended by many as a
powerful commentary of the Diaspora identity and
carries the immigrant subtext in the American locale
with typical Indian vibes.

I am presently receiving actor submissions. I would
appreciate it if you could spread the word around for
interested actors to apply for auditions.I feel I
should also let you know that this is a non-paying
acting job. But I will also add that we will be
working in a professional setup and shooting on 16mm,
so it’ll give you a good film for your portfolio and
also a lot of fun and experience. We plan to make this
a fun film!

Best wishes
regards
Rahul

I just got back from the Film Artist Network social in LA. I must
say that my friend and I were a little disappointed after driving 2
hours each way. There were about 10 people there, plus they charged
a $10 cover (included a free wine & 20% off of dinner). We weren't
expecting the cover charge. I might go to the one where they show
demo reels and trailers, etc next week to decide if it's worth it.
But then again it could be the season.

For all you screenwriters out there, you can find out about the
selling price of a script. It gives you an idea of how the industry
works in that dept.

Moniere is doing a crew/casting call in the NY area. You can check
out his last film trailer on his site. He also sent a character
breakdown. If you're interested let me know and I will email it to
you or put it on the file section of this group. It's a little too
big to attach here.

I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.

ideas and turn them into action. We'll just film it.

Perhaps your dream is to dine on top of an erupting volcano, or
assemble your college football team to settle a 20-year-old score.
Or maybe it's to audition for a Broadway show, or retrace your steps
along the Ho Chi Minh Trail with your war buddy. (Click here for
more sample dreams.) We all have things we want to do before we die.
What are you waiting for?

All you have to do is put your dream into writing by completely
filling out our online application and submitting it with a three-
minute video by Dec. 31, 2003.

I am a strong proponent of grassroots marketing. So, if you have a
project or event which you would like publicized (no get-rich-quick
schemes or MLMs please) which relates to the entertainment field,
please format it with the following structure:

-------------------
Event Title
Event Description:
Day – Date – Year
Start and End times
Address of Location
Venue or Promoter Contact Number: (XXX)-XXX-XXXX
Contact Email:
Website (recommended, but optional)

Brief synopsis (approx. 200 words or less) of
event/show/screening/class/job/casting call/ crew call/etc

If it is a casting call, please breakdown the roles (age, gender,
requires nudity, strong language, etc). Also the benefits (no pay,
but credit, copy, & meals).

-------------------
All of the above criteria must be completed in order for circulation.

FYI: The majority of the members of this group are based in Southern
California and NYC.

In turn, please send more members to this group as well as
interesting material to share with the group. The main thing I
learned from producing TRADE OFFS is that team work will get you so
much farther than doing it on your own.

Here is another networking opportunity courtesy of
actor/photographer Chad Zuber (http://www.zuberphotography.com). He
has attended this in the past and recommends it highly.

Best of Luck.

Last Meeting Recap:
Breaking The Myths And Understanding Some Of The Lighting Process

Over 60 people gathered at the San Diego Production Centre
(www.sdpcentre.com) for an informative meeting on lighting.
Production Centre partner TV Magic (www.tvmagic.tv) provided snacks,
and Digital Outpost, Jan Baxter with AdGap/Newton, and Panasonic
provided door prizes.

Chapter president Craig Bentley (www.imageworksvideo.com) started
the program with a brief synopsis of the lighting principles taught
by Bill Holshevnikoff. Then Production Centre partners Jeremy
Sykes, Chris Andrus and Michael Kantrowitz took over for the main
presentation.

The three lighting experts, along with several helpful volunteers,
including Mike Scaglione who provided lovely set elements for them
to light, spent the day of the meeting setting up two lighting
designs: one that showed a very basic, flat approach and one fully
realized setup that added depth and dimension to the set and the
stand-in actors (provided by Rock Legends). The look of each setup
was shown with two cameras and mulitple monitors. (Thanks to Bill
Bork [MAIL LINK HERE?] for help with that.)

The team presentation covered 3-point lighting (key, fill, back),
eyelights, specials, downlights, Kinoflo flourescents, practicals,
color temperature, light modifiers (egg crates, snoots, diffusion,
color correction), dimmers, monitor set up and camera set up.

Some other pearls of wisdom:
- Lighting is much easier when you avoid talent lights contaminating
your background and vice versa - the key is maintaining as much
control as possible.
- One way to avoid contamination is putting your talent as far in
front of the background as possible. This will also put the
background more out of focus - adding emphasis to your subject and
making for a prettier shot.
- A handy gel is cosmetic highlight - it diffuses the light source
and warms up the color of your subject as well.
- Kinoflo lights are properly color-balanced; other, more compact
flourescents may have a green spike in their color temperature.

All in all, a well-done presentation jam-packed with good info.
Thanks again to Jeremy, Chris, Michael, TV Magic and the rest of the
Production Centre folks! The door proceeds from the night (over
$300) was donated to the San Diego Foundation's "After the Fire
Fund".

BOLLYWOOD DEFINED
Many of you have heard the term "Bollywood" thrown around a lot in
the press lately but may not know what it means. It is a term
coined by a British reporter back in the late 70's or early 80's for
Indian cinema (Bombay + Hollywood). The term does not entirely
represent the genre and it annoys many Indian filmmakers. However,
it is something which cannot be ignored.

BOLLYWOOD IN THE PRESS
Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Bombay Dreams" is inspired by "Dil Se"
(coming to Broadway Spring 2004).
"Devdas" was a headliner at Cannes last year.
"Lagaan" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in
2001.
"Moulin Rouge" is also heavily inspired by 'Bollywood'

SAN DIEGO's BOLLYWOOD SCREENINGS
In San Diego there is Indian cinema almost every week, which is an
event more than just a movie (b/c they have intermissions half way
through the usually long movies). The following is info for the
next movie by Karan Johar (it's not about 'HO's).

AMERICAN MOVIE CLASSICS ON BOLLYWOOD
By the way, AMC even has a show on Karan this month (not sure if it
aired already). It's called, "THE AMC PROJECT: I WANT TO BE KARAN
JOHAR. Explore Bollywood - Filmmaker Peter Mattei explores India's
robust film industry and strives for face-time with Karan Johar, one
of India's hottest directors"

Would you buy shares in Billy Dead?

Producers take case to film buffs, offer stock in movie
By Russ Britt, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 6:07 PM ET Nov. 19, 2003

LOS ANGELES (CBS.MW) -- Will investors see life in "Billy Dead?" Or
will they simply opt to kill Bill?

Starting Wednesday, shares in the upcoming film "Billy Dead" were
offered at $8.75 apiece through Civilian Capital Inc. Civilian, a
self-described alternative film financier, is trying to sell 900,000
shares to back the low-budget project, in which actor Ethan Hawke
is expected to star.

The movie, a murder mystery, has yet to start filming or secure a
distribution deal. Its producers hope that filmgoers will give them
a green light along with greenbacks to get the deal going.
Officials at Billy Dead Inc., the company set up to produce the
movie, characterized the project as high risk, but said they can
mitigate that via breakup fees that are expected to cover the
initial offering. They added low-budget films have a greater chance
at profitability than costly projects. "'Monster's Ball' was more
profitable in terms of return on investment than 'Monsters Inc.,'"
said Peter Fuhrman, chief executive of Billy Dead. Made for $4
million, Lions Gate's "Monster's Ball" returned $31.3 million in
the U.S. after its 2001 release. "Monsters Inc.," a joint project by
Walt Disney Co. (DIS: news, chart, profile) and Pixar (PIXR: news,
chart, profile), cost $115 million and made $256 million in the U.S.
Hawke, nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role to
Denzel Washington's Oscar-winning performance in "Training Day,"
said it was only a matter of time before films are financed in this
manner. "Somebody is going to do this," he said. "This will happen
some day." "Billy Dead" is based on a novel by Lisa Reardon that
deals with the death of a family member and addresses such subjects
as incest in the process.
Director Keith Gordon said he read the book, told Hawke about it
and developed a script. Gordon pointed out that by going public
with financing of the film, he could sidestep much of the haggling
that can delay a project for years. Gordon has directed several low-
budget films such as "Waking the Dead" with Oscar winner Jennifer
Connelly and Billy Crudup, "Mother Night" with Nick Nolte and "A
Midnight Clear" with Hawke.
"A chance to make a film without the usual bureaucracy is a
wonderful thing to do," Gordon said. "The people who will tend to
invest in this partnership are the people who love movies." Gordon
said he discovered Civilian while poring through the usual financing
channels for the film. Civilian was involved early in the process
and came up with the suggestion to offer stock in the project.
Fuhrman said the company can mitigate some of the risk if a
distribution deal cannot be secured once the film is made. Breakup
fees to put a film directly to pay-per-view or video usually amount
to $8 million, roughly the sum the company hopes to raise in the
public offering. Billy Dead Inc. has three months to sell all
900,000 shares, with options for a three-month extension should it
fall short in that time frame. The company says it is offering
preferred shares, meaning that investors will reap the benefits of
any gains before the film's producers.
If the company cannot sell all its shares, then the cash is to be
returned to investors with interest gained from a money market

Here's a great resource for actors to post their headshots. Aaron
is very generous and offering this service for free. He's currently
working on "The Village" (aka "The Woods") written & directed by M.
Night Shyamalan. Let him know that you heard about it through me
for marketing data.

Sorry for the lack of info lately. I was in FL & NY for the last 3
weeks supporting and pushing TRADE OFFS. The screenings went really
well and we got a lot press coverage in NY. We also got to meet
Mira Nair and gave her our CD of the soundtrack and she liked it.
Author Salman Rushdie was presenting the awards at the closing
ceremony.

We've got two screenings this weekend: 11/14 @ 10pm in Dallas
(www.dsaff.org) & 11/15 @ 7pm in Carlsbad (San Diego). Check out my
homepage for more info: www.anup.net

Also, we got a killer front page article in the A&E section of the
UCSD Guardian today: http://www.ucsdguardian.org/hiatus.pdf

Check out other yahoo groups by keyword such as 'casting'
or 'filmmaking', etc.

The following info pretty cool. I know there are a few more out
there like this. I'll try and post them here soon.

Take Care,

Greetings Everyone,

Here is another site (tvtix.com) that I subscribe to. I will only
post this once, since they're doing a lot of work to put these out.
So, no need for me to reinvent the wheel. If you want to receive
more of these sign up with them. (see below)

----------------

Also, my film is Trade Offs is having a special engagement screening
because of the last sellout show (50 people turned away at the
door!) Sunday, Oct 19th at the University of San Diego at the Joan
Kroc Institue for Peace & Justice - 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA
92110. email goldspirit@... for more details. Tickets are only
$9 regular - $7 students/seniors. We're also selling the soundtrack
for $15 by awesome composer David Helpling
(http://www.dhmmusicdesign.com).

We've sold out the previous two San Diego screenings and we're
trying to push this from a marketing point of view like Blair Witch
by selling out all screenings (we're on a roll). This is such an
important aspect of making a film. It's really fun to tell you the
truth. I've been writing press release after press release. You can
see the benefit just by checking out the 'press' page on my site
(http://www.anup.net). It really works.

This movie is not technically the best you'll see (not enough
moola), however, the story is good and people have been responding
really well to it.

"Trade Offs takes some surprising turns as it nicely sidesteps a
formula plot about assimilation." - Beth Accomando, KPBS NPR

"Deypika pulls the viewer in with her layered portrayal of a woman
on the brink of change." - Lisa Tsering, India West

"Trade Offs is a compelling film." – Mohit Rajhans, Director -
Toronto South Asian Film Festival

"Anyone wanting to support local San Diego filmmaking should
check out Vikram Yashpal's feature Trade Offs " - Beth
Accomando,
KPBS NPR

Even if you can't make it, please let your friends know about it.
Just ask them to check out the trailer:
http://www.dhmmusicdesign.com/TOTrailerDHMWeb.video.html

Other screenings dates & locations:
10/25/03 - Ft. Lauderdale, FL - http://www.apfff.org
11/08/03 - New York, NY - http://www.iaac.us
11/15th weekend/03 - Dallas, TX - http://www.dsaff.org

I will be attending all the above fests, so if you have friends in
those cities as well, please ask them to check out the trailer and
let them know about the dates.

Meet the Cinema of the World:
6th IFFR TRAINEE PROJECT FOR YOUNG FILM CRITICS

The sixth IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics of the
International Film Festival Rotterdam offers three young, motivated
and talented film critics a chance to get acquainted with the
festival and the cinema of the world. The project was created by
IFFR in 1998 motivated by the fact that young and upcoming film
critics get less opportunities to explore this range of cinema and
the festivals, like the International Film Festival Rotterdam, that
present it.

In the past five editions we have welcomed trainees from Argentina,
Australia, Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chili, Hungary, India,
Lithuania, Sweden and the USA.

What to expect:
We offer three young film critics a press accreditation, budget
hotel accomodation during their stay at the festival and (part of)
their airfare according to their country of origin. The trainees are
allowed to use all the press facilities and will have time to
explore all aspects of the festival, the film and exhibitions
programme as well as the debates and talkshows. The trainees will
operate among hundreds of international critics, and are able to
meet filmmakers and industry representatives.
We want the selected film critics to really participate in the
festival: attend the FIPRESCI Jury meetings, contribute to the IFFR
Daily Tiger and report their experiences on the IFFR website. In
addition, they should work on articles to be published in their home
country. The three trainees will form a small team, supported by the
IFFR Press Office and Press Desk Staff.

Criteria for application:
Age under 30 years / Fluent command of the English language
(written, spoken) / Demonstrable experience in film criticism
(printed media, radio/television, online) / Not yet established
enough to profit from facilities as attending international
festivals / Have agreement(s) with printed and/or online media to
publish on (films from) the International Film Festival Rotterdam
2004.

How to apply:
We require a written application with a resume, motivation, as well
as a up to three proofs of work and agreement(s) with their
affiliation(s). Candidates from all over the world are welcome.
Deadline for applications: Friday November 14, 2003, notification
before Dec 10, 2003.

You can find more detailed information on the festival at:
www.filmfestivalrotterdam.com.
