SLAVES AND ENSIGNS: THE FAR SIDE OF THE BORDER ("S&E")

My 15min short documentary S&E which I shot during "Master and Commander: The
Far Side of the World" just got picked up for online distribution through IFILM.
Not only that, they selected it for their "Plus" site IFILMPlus. It means that
you have to be a subscriber (or jump hoops to sign up for their 14 day free
trial) to view it. I'll let you know when it becomes available for regular
viewing.

SCREENER BAN

The awards screener ban instituted last fall by the Motion Picture Association
of American (MPAA) clearly showed that it and the Major Motion Picture Studios
(MMPS) that it represents had no compunction about pursuing policies that were
inimical to the interests of the independent filmmaking community.

ACTORS - HOW TO GET WORK IN YOUR

Looking for work is the perennial plight of being an actor. By now you should
already be familiar with the more commonly recognized ways of going about his.
But, have you ever thought about also going local? Did you know that there are
also jobs right in your hometown and the surrounding area? Summer is a good time
to spend time on this, especially if you're going home for a bit, or keep this
information on hand for the holidays when a lot of actors also go home. To get
to the local jobs is a little different than what you've probably been doing up
to now.

So here's the inside track on getting these "invisible jobs" right
under your nose!

First step is doing the following research if you haven't done so already - look
at commercials and print ads and see which ones you think you could do. In other
words, "I could do that!" Write down this list.

Next step, go straight to the yellow pages of your hometown. Look under
"Advertising Agencies." These are companies that do local advertising for your
local department stores and other businesses that reach out to the public. They
do newspaper and magazine ads, TV commercials, billboards, brochures, circulars,
etc. And many of them need and use well-qualified actors and models - and they
may not find this talent locally. BUT THAT'S YOU!

Be pro-active. Contact these advertising agencies! Call up and ask who the
Creative Director is and if you get through, introduce yourself as a
professionally trained New York actor and/or model and may you send them your
headshot and/or comp and tell them when you are going to be in town. In most
cases, they are pretty receptive to speaking to someone who is so enterprising -
and coming in from New York City.

If you can't get through on the phone, ask who the Creative Director is and send
them your materials through the mail. Wait a week and follow up with a phone
call and if you could see them for few minutes. I have found that many times you
get a very warm reception - not nearly as tough as in New York City. In fact,
you might feel almost like a celebrity.

When you get the opportunity to go in and meet with them, follow the
guidelines laid out in the article, "How to Give a Good Interview"
following this topic.

After meeting with them, stay in touch periodically - we recommend once a month
with a picture post card of what you've done in your career - so they don't
forget about you and you stay top of mind with them.

If you use these simple but effective steps you'll be amazed at how much work
you'll find right where you are. And it's a great way to gain experience, get
exposure, make some money, collect tear sheets and get a good, solid career
going for you fairly quickly. (Not to mention seeing the folks. Who knows, they
might actually become proud of you and stop asking why you're not starring with
Brad Pitt in his next movie. But no guarantees.) And if you're already earning
money in this business, that trip home to see the folks just might be tax
deductible (be sure to go over with your theatrical tax consultant).

Good luck!

I apologize for not providing the source of this article (which I try to do at
all times).
