Television
Determination, With Giggles and Quarrels
By MARK BLANKENSHIP

DURING a recent rehearsal for an Off Broadway play, it was hard to remember that
Bobby Cannavale and Sarah Paulson star in a fizzy television series like
“Cupid.” Circling each other, they spit out some of the nastiest lines in Mark
Schultz’s “Gingerbread House,” a dark satire about a couple who decide to sell
their children.

At one point the actors carried their intensity out of the scene, pausing to
discuss the timing of some overlapping lines. As they debated the right moment
for Mr. Cannavale’s shady businessman to interrupt Ms. Paulson’s distraught
mother, they grew more and more intense, cutting each other off to advocate
their artistic points. They weren’t fighting, exactly, but the tension was
thick.

Then Mr. Cannavale made a joke about things “getting heavy,” and Ms. Paulson
scrunched her face and did a little dance. The air cleared, everyone in the room
laughed, and it was easy to imagine the actors appearing on “Cupid,” ABC’s
cotton-candy show about a man who thinks he’s the god of love. (Mr. Cannavale
plays the title character, and Ms. Paulson plays Claire, a psychiatrist who
doubts his immortality and his sanity.)

That balance — earnestly determined about their work but not taking themselves
too seriously — has allowed Ms. Paulson and Mr. Cannavale to navigate two such
markedly different projects. “Cupid” is broadcast on Tuesday nights on ABC, and
“The Gingerbread House,” presented by the stageFarm, opened on April 18 at
Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in the West Village.

“I’ll be doing a scene with Bobby, and Sarah will be off camera making monkey
faces,” said Rick Gomez, who plays Mr. Cannavale’s landlord and boss on “Cupid.”
“It creates this atmosphere of kids one-upping each other, and you feel like
you’re free to play.”

It’s not all goofing off on the set. “With Bobby and Sarah the work is never
done,” Mr. Gomez said. “There’s always one more thing to try, and it really
pushes you to do better work.”

Since its premiere last month “Cupid” has earned mediocre ratings (around six
million viewers a week) and received mixed reviews, though many critics praised
the two leads. (A similar reaction greeted the play.) When Alex Kilgore,
stageFarm’s artistic director, cast them in “The Gingerbread House,” “Cupid” was
not yet on the air. Mr. Kilgore said he knew they had filmed the series, and
while that wasn’t the reason he cast them, it was certainly an asset.

“It made me feel like we were ahead of the game,” Mr. Kilgore said. “There was a
real comfort between them from the moment they read the script, so instead of
waiting two weeks for everyone to trust each other, I was able to start focusing
on what the play is really about.” (Evan Cabnet replaced Mr. Kilgore as director
of “The Gingerbread House” a few days before opening.)

The two actors make a striking physical pair. Mr. Cannavale, 37, is tall and
dark. He’s known for his guy’s-guy charm in television series like “Will &
Grace” and his brooding charisma with a hint of menace in plays like
“Hurlyburly” and “Mauritius” (for which he received a Tony nomination). Ms.
Paulson, 34, is a serious-looking blonde, lauded for her intelligent humor on
Aaron Sorkin’s “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and her subtle evocation of
regret in the Roundabout Theater’s 2008 revival of “Crimes of the Heart.”

Mr. Cannavale and Ms. Paulson overlap professionally, in their lack of formal
training and their similar approaches to developing a role. “In both jobs we
just want to make it clear that we want something,” Mr. Cannavale said, sharing
a couch with Ms. Paulson after a rehearsal of “The Gingerbread House.”

Ms. Paulson added: “There’s just no point in doing it if the stakes aren’t high.
I try to make the stakes for my character just as high in ‘Cupid’ as they are in
this play, because if they aren’t, who’s going to care?”

Ms. Paulson said she was glad to work with Mr. Cannavale onstage, since
television’s quick shooting schedule doesn’t allow for much discussion of what’s
happening in a scene. “I always feel shortchanged, somehow, working on
television,” she said, “because I don’t ever feel like I can get to a place
where my performance is as good as it can be. With this play I’m relieved that
we don’t have to figure out the answers in the 10 minutes before we start
shooting. We can all investigate the nooks and crannies.”

Asked how she creates a role, Ms. Paulson said she searched for the pieces of a
character that were like herself, rather than trying to construct an entirely
fictional person. “Otherwise it comes off like, ‘Oh, I want to make her nervous,
so I’ll be a hand-wringer,’ ” she said. “It seems dishonest.”

“That’s weird,” Mr. Cannavale said. “I haven’t heard you say that, but now I
know one of the reasons I connect with you. I go the same way. I go with how I
relate to the character, then I pull away the things I know wouldn’t help.”

Then Ms. Paulson teased Mr. Cannavale about a day when he was hamming it up on
the “Cupid” set: “You said, ‘Should that be less big? And I said: ‘Yes.
Definitely.’ ”

Mr. Cannavale thrust his arm in the air like a heroic statue. “Right,” he said,
“because I was doing it like, ‘I’ve got a match to make!’ ”

Ms. Paulson said: “It’s funny because we do check in with each other. I’m a very
sensitive person, and normally if an actor told me my performance wasn’t
working, I’d be like” back off. “And I’d start posturing and defending my turf.
But I don’t do that with Bobby.”

Mr. Cannavale said: “Yeah, me too. Sarah and I clicked when we met, and I think
we knew right away we had something like-minded. When you meet a friend, it’s
just there.”

Equal-Pay Agitator Meets the New Her
By PATRICK HEALY
AS Violet Newstead, the coffee-poisoning, corpse-stealing, boss-kidnapping
office supervisor in the hit 1980 movie “9 to 5,” Lily Tomlin did just about
everything except sing and dance. But now those tasks (in addition to the coffee
poisoning, corpse stealing and boss-napping) have fallen to Allison Janney, the
Emmy-winning actress who is playing Violet in the new musical version of “9 to
5,” which opens on Broadway Thursday.
The two Violets met on a recent Saturday evening in Ms. Janney’s dressing room
to compare notes on the character, who emerged during the Reagan era as a symbol
for women seeking equal treatment in the workplace. And while the two actresses
did dwell a bit on the politics of “9 to 5,” other concerns were higher on their
agenda, with the first order of business being, yes, the singing and dancing.
Neither woman is expert at either, and Ms. Janney began the conversation with a
blunt admission of surprise that she was cast in the role because, as she said,
“I’m not really known for my singing voice.” That was emphasized in some reviews
of her performance in the show’s tryout last year in Los Angeles — as if she
weren’t already feeling pressure by taking on a character so identified with Ms.
Tomlin.
“I was incredibly intimidated at first, thinking I had to follow in Lily’s
shoes,” Ms. Janney said, sitting in front of a picture of the three lead
actresses from the movie: Ms. Tomlin, Jane Fonda (as the shy, awkward Judy
Bernly) and Dolly Parton (as the maligned secretary Doralee Rhodes). “I focused
on giving Violet a big heart and on her personal and professional longings, and
that made me feel confident.”
“Follow in my shoes?” Ms. Tomlin said with a laugh. “You have this whole other
layer of having to sing and dance.”
“Can you sing?” Ms. Janney asked.
“Probably not as well as you,” Ms. Tomlin said.
“C’mon.”
“I sang for Bob Altman — sang gospel for him in ‘Nashville,’ and I sang harmony
for Meryl in ‘Prairie Home Companion,’ ” Ms. Tomlin said, referring to two
movies directed by Robert Altman, one featuring her and Meryl Streep as a
country duet act. “I had to practice that damn harmony for three months when I
did ‘Prairie.’ ”
“I do a lot of harmony,” Ms. Janney said, nodding and stressing the words “a
lot.”
While the plot and dialogue of this new “9 to 5” are similar to the movie — one
of its screenwriters, Patricia Resnick, wrote the book for the musical, with
music and lyrics by Ms. Parton — Violet’s role has been enhanced with the
addition of a love interest and a finale moment when Violet explains why she,
Judy and Doralee kidnapped their sexist boss. But the essential ingredient of
the movie — the uprising Violet leads on behalf of the office secretaries —
still defines the character in the musical.
This is no small source of pride for Ms. Tomlin, 69, who has been politically
active in liberal causes for years. Just this year President Obama signed the
Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, giving workers more flexibility to file equal pay
lawsuits, a right that Violet was fighting for 29 years ago, Ms. Tomlin noted.
“At the time all of us felt that things like flex time, equal pay and women
being promoted were way behind the curve,” Ms. Tomlin said. “I think ‘9 to 5’
helped show the way that women in the office found strength from one another,
the way they battled against stereotypes, the way they started taking action to
be treated fairly.”
“Though the idea of tying the boss up for weeks and not being charged with
kidnapping ——” she added with a laugh.
Ms. Janney, who is 49, said: “That girl-power element was just so delicious. I
remember watching ‘9 to 5’ a lot, and I definitely identified with Lily. I
thought that was the part I would play if I did it.”
Robert Greenblatt, a producer of the “9 to 5” musical, said that Ms. Janney —
who was last on Broadway in the Arthur Miller drama “A View from the Bridge” in
1998 — was an early favorite for the role in part because she shared some
qualities with Ms. Tomlin (who most recently performed on Broadway in 2001 in a
revival of “The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe,” the
one-woman show that earned her a best-actress Tony Award in 1986).
“Both women convey strength and smarts so well, and with tremendous humor,” Mr.
Greenblatt said. “And even if Allison might not have the background of a musical
actress, part of her strength is the way she makes her characters iconic, which
we all know Violet to be.”
As it happens, Ms. Tomlin and Ms. Janney worked together from 2002 to 2006 on
the NBC series “The West Wing,” for which Ms. Janney won four Emmys as the White
House press secretary (and later chief of staff) C. J. Cregg. Ms. Tomlin played
Debbie Fiderer, the president’s wisecracking, pot-smoking private secretary; the
two women did not have many scenes together, but their characters shared a sly
sensibility, and Ms. Janney said she drew on Ms. Tomlin’s inventiveness on the
set.
“I watched her like a little spy,” Ms. Janney said. “She’s such an improviser,
and the way things were run on ‘The West Wing,’ everything had to be letter
perfect. She always managed to make it look fun.”
Ms. Tomlin, in turn, said she admired Ms. Janney’s gumption as the resilient C.
J. — so much so that at one point in their conversation Ms. Tomlin objected
strongly when Ms. Janney said she considered herself to be “personally more of a
Judy than a Violet,” in a similar way that some women today refer to themselves
as a Carrie or a Samantha ŕ la the “Sex and the City” characters.
“Oh, how could C. J. be a Judy?” Ms. Tomlin said. “C. J. is so confident, so
funny. You’re much more a Violet.”
At which point Ms. Janney leaned into their interviewer and stage-whispered,
“Lily really is Violet.”

Hi guys,

I'm not really one to do this and thow out OT links, but this one's important to
me. And considering our fictional former US President (and our favourite
scribe) brought the disease front and centre, I thought it applied...

A friend of mine was diagnosed with MS a few years ago at the age of 25. He's a
very talented and acclaimed documentary filmmaker splitting time between
Vancouver and New York. In his young and promising career, he has shown
everywhere from HBO and PBS to Sundance and abroad.

Since his diagnosis, he's taken on one of the bravest, if tragic challenges I
can imagine -- he's creating a documentary called "When I Walk" chronicling his
experience with the disease. It's still in progress and I'm not sure when he'll
decide it's ready, but in the meantime there is a trailer and he maintains a
video blog featuring recent eventual in-film vignettes.

Please have a look: it's personal, informative and moving. God willing it won't
be the last film we get from him

Thanks for your time,

L.

Hi,

I've been collecting some Sports Night memorabilia for a while now,
everything from promotional mugs and glasses to crew jackets and posters. I
also collect photocopies of scripts, as they often include scenes or bits
that didn't make it into the episodes and are fun to read.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if there were any other collectors on here,
and if so, see if anyone was interested in trading scripts or other bits?

If interested, just reply to my message here or shoot me an email at
michaeldshea@....

Thanks,
Mike

IMO...from "Gone Quiet."  I think of this speech often during election seasons
-- because he has a point!

"We all need some therapy because somebody came along and said liberal means
soft on crime, soft on drugs, soft on Communism, soft on defense. And we're
going to tax you back to the stone age because people shouldn't have to work if
they don't want to. And instead of saying 'Well, excuse me, you right-wing
reactionary, xenophobic, homophobic, anti-education, anti-choice, pro-gun Leave
it to Beaver trip back to the '50s'. We cowered in the corner and say, 'Please
don't hurt me.' " -- Bruno Gianelli.

Best,
Linda.

The Farnsworth Invention
A New Play by The West Wing’s Aaron Sorkin

Who will win the race to invent the greatest innovation of the 20th century?
Beck Center presents the Cleveland premiere of the award-winning play, The
Farnsworth Invention, on the Mackey Main Stage, March 13 through April 11, 2009.
Show times are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays.

It’s the classic David and Goliath tale. The powerful president of RCA, David
Sarnoff, competes with a self-taught potato farmer’s son, Philo Farnsworth, to
invent a device Farnsworth calls “electronic television.” Although they are very
different men, their vision is the same: to use this technology as a vehicle for
social change. As Sarnoff tells his wife, “It’s gonna change everything, it’s
gonna end ignorance and misunderstanding, it’s gonna end illiteracy. It’s going
to end war.”

Aaron Sorkin, whose stage play A Few Good Men caught the attention of Hollywood
in 1988, went on to write and create several critically acclaimed movies and
television shows, including The American President, Charlie Wilson’s War, The
West Wing, and Sports Night. He returned to the stage when his play The
Farnsworth Invention opened on Broadway in December 2007.

“The Farnsworth Invention is, essentially, a documentary on stage. Sorkin
adeptly tells the story of two very different men—a Jewish immigrant media mogul
and a Mormon whiz kid from Idaho—who are separated by 2,000 miles but have the
same ambition: to change the world,” says director Scott Spence. “I couldn’t
wait to bring this show to Beck’s stage and share Sorkin’s brilliant script with
audiences across Northeast Ohio.”

Tickets are $28 for adults, $25 for seniors (65 and older), and $17 for students
(22 and under with ID). An additional $3 service fee per ticket is applied at
the time of purchase. Preview night on Thursday, March 12, is $10 with general
admission seating. Group discounts are available for parties of 13 or more. To
reserve tickets, call the Beck Center box office at 216.521.2540 ext. 10, or
request seats here. For group sales, contact Linda Hefner at ext. 29. Beck
Center is located at 17801 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood, just 10 minutes west of
downtown Cleveland. Free onsite parking is available.

Beck Center’s production of The Farnsworth Invention is presented by special
arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. and is sponsored by FIT Technologies, WTAM
1100AM, WCPN 90.3FM, Cleveland Scene, Cox Communications, and the Ohio Arts
Council. Beck Center’s production is also generously funded by the citizens of
Cuyahoga County through Cuyahoga Arts and Culture.

Beck Center for the Arts is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization that offers
professional theater productions on two stages, arts education programming in
dance, music, theater, visual arts, early childhood, and creative arts therapies
for special needs students, and gallery exhibits featuring local and regional

Aaron was asked about the Rahm connection and said he didn't really have any way
of putting that in Brad's head since he hadn't met Rahm when he began the show
(I think didn't have Ari as an agent yet) but that whatever Brad wanted to use
was fine by him.

The Rush/GOP thing does smack of Lyman-esque tactics. It's so entertaining to
watch someone actually playing political smackdown when we've had a rudderless
ship for the last 8 years. I mean what Karl Rove and Cheney were doing didn't
qualify as longterm planning in my opinion. In fact I'd go so far as to say
they weren't even penny-wise, pound-foolish about the Iraq War or Katrina.
Lives were/are at stake, it's moved beyond cliched sayings. Rahm's aware that
if he plays the situation right now, that's setting them up for 2012. Someone
actually planning ahead? Sorry, I'm too busy of being appreciative of the return
to political sense to say anymore.

Always love to hear anything about this feisty broad and that's offered in the
best sense of those words.

Very odd, I was working as a reporter in 1992 and was sent to Florida to cover
the opening of the Disney/MGM park. I loved all the street characters and now
wonder if I came face to face with one of my favorite scene stealers.

Thanks for sharing and it's good to hear that there are second acts when so many
of us are looking at an end to our first act.

Kindest regards,

ljd

Beth sent this to me and asked me to pass it on.

"Read the last few paragraphs of the second page...It will remind you of
something"

"It’s an empiricism that extends to life around his spacious new office. The
budget director spoke to Politico on the side of his office he refers to
as “the living room.” In it, a small red sofa and two hard wooden armchairs
face a marble fireplace. When Orszag arrived for his first weekend of work on a
snowy January day, there were logs neatly stacked.

“It still seemed a little suspicious. So I lit a piece of paper to see if it
vented,” Orszag said. The smoke went up the chimney.

“So then we lit a few logs. It was venting. It was fine,” he said. The only
problem: The Secret Service had capped the building’s chimneys. Smoke alarms
started going off upstairs, and the building was evacuated.

And though Orzag wasn’t publicly named as the culprit (“Smoke Linked to
Attempt to Use 2nd-Floor Fireplace,” was the Washington Post’s headline the
next day.), the incident remains the source of much amusement inside the White
House.

“Rahm asked me to send smoke signals to the Hill,” Orszag recalled."

The AV Club asked Tim Matheson about his various roles, including John
Hoynes on West Wing. He says it was dear to his heart,

And that he thinks it was actually a comedy.

"It's a very intellectual and cerebral comedy, but it was SportsNight
in the White House."

I know what he means.

Also talks a bit about the idealism Sorkin captures in his writing.

I say we let it run wild and leave it up to the invisible hand of the
free market.

Oh, the invisible hand, with its soft, sensuous touch, clad in velvet,
at once strict... but gentle...

Wow I really appreciate all the time you've been here Sarah. I had no
idea it was that long. If we're doing any kind of a vote, I'd like
someone to step in and run it. As much as I'd like to volunteer, my
course load's just too heavy. I think Aaron's plate is only going to
be more full so we need a place to talk about it! From experience,
Ioan Gruffudd website rather suddenly imploded (his now-wife,
then-fiance made up an out and out lie about a perfectly innocent
member of the forum minding her own business, Ioan sided with
her--there's a shock and really could you blame him if he wanted to
marry her?--and he pulled his secret funding). It threw a lot of
people so the 9 month heads up is really appreciated. (For anyone
wanting to know the full story, the imdb board for Ioan will be happy
to share).

Thanks for being such a good hostess Sarah.

You've been a wonderful moderator, displaying great kindness, dignity,
knowledge, and fairness.  We will all miss that.  I hope that the
group does not disband, but that you will be able to find someone who
can fill your shoes at least half as well as you.

Hi Sarah,

Are you sure you don't want to give all of us a couple of more decades of your
life?

Seriously, thank you for everything you've done with this group.  You've been a
wonderful moderator, displaying great kindness, dignity, knowledge, and
fairness.  We will all miss that.  I hope that the group does not disband, but
that you will be able to find someone who can fill your shoes at least half as
well as you.

Hello all,

This November will mark the 10th anniversary of this group. I've
decided that at that time, I will be stepping down from it. I will
either be passing the reigns to someone else, or will be closing the
group. I wanted to leave that to a group vote, instead of just
springing it on you.

I know that is nine months off, so there is no rush to the decisions,
but I wanted to give the members, old and new, a chance to chime in.

Thanks to all of you for everything, and for a very memorable time
together.

Love,
Sarah
