I just have to say, I'm SOOOO glad I'm not alone in doing that!! :o)

I mean, I only have the thing almost totally memorized!!

Oh, and something I've noticed since in the last 24 hours I've watched the
entire 1st season of SN.....Aaron tends to make quite a few mentions of the
state of Indiana! I was only half paying attention to that fact, while
revelling in the fact that *I HAVE ALL OF SEASON 1 IN MY POSSESSION*
(sorry....still jazzed about that) but he does mention my homestate quite
often. Twice that I can think of offhand in TAP, plus I dunno HOW many times
in SN so far. Haven't seen AFGM in a while (last time was junior year in
high school at band camp....in my friend Adam's dorm room at the college we
stayed at.....WELL after curfew <G> I wasn't ALWAYS a little angel
y'know....)

Just an observation from my deranged little corner of the universe :o)

Y'know....it's kinda funny :o) Last Thursday I went to a workshop to aid in
the creative process at school. The guy that was speaking looked SOOO much
like Aaron! At least, looked like he did in the American President. I was
sitting there talking to people around me until they got the ball rolling. I
looked up atthe stage and my jaw hit the floor! It was so cool!

you should really see these movies. They're both great. I own G.I.Jane
because I love it so much, but it's not one of the movies like The American
President or The Breakfast Club that I watch all the time. I must've seen
The Hunt For Red October at least four or five times by now. They're both
so great.

It was in the beginning of the movie, when Joanne is going in to see the
Commander and trying to figure out what she's going to say.

Well, from what I knew at the time the movie came out, this was based on a true
story, and the Marine Corps didn't want anything to do with the telling of it.
One of the men it was actually about came forward later and talked about
everything on radio shows and anywhere in public he could - apparently he was
upset about having his story told without his consent or financial gain - and he
was mysteriously found dead not long after he started making all that noise.

I strongly recommend that all of Aaron Rorkin's fans read the
profile of him in the Los Angeles Times Sunday newspaper Calendar
Section--Oct. 10, 1999. It talks about both his work with the West Wing
and his work with Sports Night. You might want to check their website,
your pubic library, or purchase the paper through the mail. I will copy
the article and send it to anyone who cannot get it by other means.

JoAnne, my sympathies go to anyone from Texas A & M College who was
affected by the accident last week.

I don't recall having seen the drill team when I saw "A Few Good
Men" as a first run movie. But I'll look for them when I rewatch it.

The movie producers probably used the Texas A & M drill team
because the Defense Department did not give them any technical
assistance when they were filming the movie. The Defense Department
apparently hasn't heard of the first amendment. They tend to give
technical assistance to anyone whose plot they approve of (even an
unrealistic television series, such as J.A.G.). And they refuse to
give assistance to anyone whose plot they don't like. Some of the films
which were made without their cooperation are "A Few Good Men", "Courage
Under Fire" (Denzil Washington and Meg Ryan), "The Hunt for Red
October", and "G.I. Jane". (I haven't seen the last 2 movies yet.)

Both the Defense Department and the White House did cooperate with
the filming of Aaron Sorkin's other movie, "An American President".

I would like public agencies to make their decision about
cooperating to be based on whether the filming will unduly disrupt their
normal operations, not on plot content.

Dominick,

I was also a member of Amnesty International for a long time, so I know what
you're talking about. In regards to the State Dept., in the case of embassy
security, The Marine Corps and the State Dept. work together, so there is some
of both entities in each embassy and consulate. It's very possible that some of
my students were involved in the Africa bombings, but I left there 3 1/2 years
ago, so I really don't know anyone anymore.

I know this is all off-topic, but I don't see anything wrong with that once in a
while, since there are only about 30 of us on the list.

Oh, by the way. I'm sorry I didn't put spoiler space with that news from Aaron.
I was so excited that he even gave us that info that it didn't occur to me to
put the space there. I'll do it in the future.

Good luck with submitting your play. and with your writing career.
It would be interesting to see you discuss what you are writing about on
the AaronSorkin list. (What are you writing about?)

It must have been depressing to deal with a lot of countries which
probably have very poor human rights records. Although maybe you didn't
have much contact with them, if you were primarily stationed in the
United States. As a member of Amnesty International, I've sent plenty
of letters to other countries, complaining about human rights
violations.

Do you think that any of your students helped out at our African
embassies after those horrible bombings? I suppose that your work
helped your students to prevent a lot of other horrible incidents like
that. I used to think that the State Department poice (the agents who
protect visiting foreign ministers) were the main people in charge of
embassy security. But in the news media, the Marine Corps was the only
federal agency which I heard about which was handling the immediate
main response to the bombing.

I decline any offer to play Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit with you,
if the catagories include foreign countries.

Hi everyone,

Suzy asked about getting the SN episodes from Aaron. I wrote snail mail to
Aaron and Jamie Tarsus, both at the ABC address. The letters were similar,
though I said more in Aaron's. I asked about buying episodes. I included my
return address, my phone number (as if) and my email address. I received a
form letter back from ABC in response to the one to Jamie saying that they
were sorry they couldn't do that. I received email (!) from Aaron saying it
was illegal to sell them but nothing said that he couldn't give them away.
He asked which episodes I was missing. Although I would have loved to get
them all from him, I had gotten all but 5 from other members of the onelist
along with what I had taped. He sent me the other 5.

I have the entire first season on 4 tapes. I can make copies if you want.

Hello all you Sorkin fans. I'm new to the list, so I thought I'd answer the
question about how I became a fan.
Well, I really only found out about Aaron Sorkin this fall, it might have
been when I joined the SN list, but it might have been before. I had no
idea that he had written A Few Good Men or THe American President or
anything, however The American President was already one of my favorite
movies, which of course it still is. I literally watched it every day for a
week when I first bought it last summer. Anyway, Sports Night is still what
I'm most impressed with, although who isn't impressed with A Few Good Men.
The reason I like it is because it is so incredibly sharply written.
There's never a dull moment, it's intellectually stimulating, you're likely
to learn some interesting little tidbit you never knew about before (cliff
gardner, thespis, random things like that), and it's just such an incredible
change of pace from most tv shows. That's why I was so impressed with it
from the beginning, and still am. I think it must be incredibly hard to
write a weekly half hour show and keep it good for any length of time.
You'll notice most shows lose their touch pretty quickly. I think that
Aaron will be able to keep Sports Night fresh and great for a long time,
assuming it isn't cancelled and he continues doing the writing for it.
Things always go downhill when the original writer stops writing the
episodes (i give you picket fences and chicago hope after David Kelley
became too occupied with other things).
Alright, I could go on forever, but you wouldn't want to read it so that's
it for my answer to that question.
On another topic, I would love to contact Aaron so that I could praise his
work more personally, so for those of you who have contacted him either
through email or snail mail, what addresses did you use. Also, whoever it
was that got episodes by writing to him, exactly how did that work. I've
been trying to get episodes from someone on the SN list, but she's been
having VCR problems, and I don't have a single episode on tape since I can't
tape things at college (no TV/VCR) and I really really really want at least
some, if not all.

Okay! Well, I'd have to say the first movie I really got into written by
Aaron was The American President--I rented it enough times to have bought it
at least 4 or 5 times before I finally *did* break down and buy the darn
thing! And it was after getting totally hooked on that movie that I realized
he'd written A Few Good Men, which I *had* seen before and liked a lot.

And by the way, I'm not sure if she's a member of this list or not, but I
totally blame Chandy from the 1SN and DCers lists for me getting hooked on
Sports Night. Just your nightly 2 minute confirmation that this is all
Chandy's fault. :o)

Dominick,

I worked as an embassy liaison, and helped train the Marines who were then
sent out to guard the embassies. I did get to handle and fire a lot weapons,
and because of the job, got to work with a lot of people from the FBI, CIA,
State Dept., etc., and learned a lot about small areas of the world I might
never otherwise have heard of. As a result, I almost always nail the
Capitals of the World category on Jeopardy (if no others : ). I was offered
positions with the CIA and public affairs when I was getting ready to leave
the Marines in 1996, but by then I decided I really wanted to follow my dream
of being a writer, and moved out here with my then-infant daughter, and
that's what I'm working on now. In fact, I'm about to submit a play to
Timothy Davis-Reed's theatre company to see if they will produce it (and if
he'll be in it : ). We'll see.

Sorry if that was far more than you wanted to know about me : )

First off, let me just say that this is off topic for the Sports Night list.
I apologize for this, but I know that a lot of you have been watching The
West Wing (especially now, during our SN withdrawal period), so that's why
I'm sending it to you as well.

There's a really great article about Rob Lowe in this week's issue of USA
Weekend. It also has a couple *nice* pictures, a few quotes from Aaron, and
a funny backstage story. If you don't get USA Weekend with your newspaper,
you can find the article on the web at:

Well, like many others I didn't even realize I was a
fan of his until Sports Night. I too, loved AFGM and
TAP, I also loved Malice. It wasn't until SN that I
even paid attention to his name. I have always been
criticized myself for writing in that "Chatty fast
paced" style that Aaron has turned into an art. It's
good to see someone succeed at it. I just hope that
he doesn't get burned out working on both shows. They
are both too good to lose.

Another place you can see Aaron is in a very small role in The American
President. He plays the aide Michael J. Fox talks to in the bar. He only
has two or three lines, but he's still good. I'd like to see him do more
acting -- if he could add 10 hours to the day.

Well, if your computer can handle this, you can go to the NBC website. Go to
the page for the West Wing. There you'll find a video clip about TWW. We see
Aaron in this, and he talks about the show for a few seconds.

(If the rest of you guys haven't seen this, you should check it out. It's a

Quite honestly, I don't usually become aware of writers until I start following
a body of work. I LOVED A Few Good Men and The American President, but had no
idea that Aaron had penned both until I got on the Sports Night list.

Sports Night just bowled me over. <G> From the very first episode, the style
was so incredibly intelligent I couldn't tear myself away and I knew I would
love it forever. That was what caused me to want to investigate other works of
Aaron's. The cast for SN was so well chosen and I like the way he playfully
addresses adult issues without buying into the "sitcom fare" that is usually
projected in comedies. When I get to the end of my day I find it the perfect
way to be "fed" and amused.

West Wing on the other hand I'm having a weird time with. <G> It may be because
I grew up in the D. C. suburbs and have that slanted realism about the people
that run the government. What I noticed most about West Wing was that the cast
is so incredibly white. You'd think being of caucasion nature I wouldn't even
notice it, but in a way I feel like I'm missing part of the representation of
our country in that West Wing is a show about how the country is run. (How's
THAT for sentence construction!)

All the main characters are white with the exception of Charlie who was added in
later, but we don't really see him a whole lot. It's like all the people who
are in major support of the president and the people who support them as well
are all white. In Sports Night the core cast is very well mixed and I feel like
its more realistic because of that. We see the control room folks a lot in
every episode even if its only for short bits at a time.

I'd really like to see Native Americans represented. I think it would be an
interesting dynamic because as far as our government goes, they are generally
left out of the minority picture. They were here first. <G> It will be
interesting to see where James Olmos<sp?> fits in.

The best part about West Wing is we get to soak in an hour of Aaron's writing.
Even though I'm still trying to get comfortable with the show, I'm addicted to
it as well. My favorite part of the show is Rob Lowe's character and the chick
who plays Bobbie Bernstein. The show addresses so many other serious topics,
its nice to have that playful aspect thrown in there.

I don't have any specific lines of Aaron's that I can quote. My favorite
Sorkinese is when he's being completely off the wall and a bit silly. <G>

Hi!

By now, we should have a nice mixture of SN and WW fans. We already have
about 22 members (hopefully, not too many lurkers : ). I thought it would be
a good way to get started if we all said how we became fans of Aaron, and
maybe what some of our favorite Sorkinese phrases are, or what we like about
his writing and shows. Meredith kind of started this for us before, but
we've added several members since then.

I became a fan when I saw A Few Good Men as a new Marine. I was totally
astounded by the dialogue and the rhythm of the speeches. Not just the famous
Nicholson speech at the end, but the one where Danny is telling Joanne what a
stupid idea it would be to put Jessup on the stand. Anyway, I was hooked on
his writing after that. And I love how his writing can be in your face, but
kind of poetic at the same time.

Anyway, I could go on for pages, but I won't. There are too many things I
love about Aaron's writing to pinpoint any one thing.

What do you all think?

I'm glad someone started this list.

The biggest thing that I love about Aaron is that he cares about his viewers.
He is the only person from television to answer me personally. It truly took
me by surprise.
(He's written me twice!)

I hope that he's getting some sleep! My goodness - two shows and their both
are high quality shows!

More later -

This is the response I received from Aaron, begging for some clarification
about the Dana/Casey issue. I think this is going to get very interesting!

<<The "transitional theory" is right. Casey's only had one really serious
girlfriend since he was 18. Dana doesn't want to be the rebound girl (which
Sally's already acted as--stay tuned for more Sally). Casey'll go out on his
first date after the first of the year, and I'm afraid that's gonna be the
beginning of the end for Dana.

Also, Bill Macy will return, as will Teri Polo (Rebecca).

Howdy gang:

Out of the blue this morning, I received this note from Aaron!! When I caught
my breath and could see straight again, I told him I was absolutely for real,
and that actually many people had leapt at the chance to have this list to talk
about him and the writing. I also asked if it would be OK to write him once in
a while with questions, if we promised not to overload his inbox. Also, for
those of us who had this question, I asked him how it was that Dana could have a
dinner engagement with a male high school friend (Louise Revisited) when she
went to a series of all-girl schools (Dear Louise)? We'll see:

<<Sarah,

If I find out that you're either Josh Malina, Brad Whitford or Rob Lowe
playing a little joke on me, there'll be internet retribution the likes of
which you've never experienced.

If you're actually you, then I'm extremely flattered.

--Aaron>>

What do you think an internet war between them would be like?? Intriguing, isn't
it?

I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I was happy to see people come
on to the list so quickly. I sent a message to two west wing lists as well,
inviting them. Hopefully, more will join. We only have 6 so far. But I
thought it would be nice to start by talking about what first got each of us
hooked on his writing. Thanks for getting that started for us, Meredith!

For me, it was A Few Good Men. I had been a US Marine about 3 months when
the movie came out in late 92, and my friends and I were ready to hate the
movie, just sure that it would be all wrong. But we were wrong, and gladly
so. His writing always pumps my adrenaline, somehow, and makes me challenge
my own writing that much more. I am very grateful he's in this business, and
I'm glad that even with the Sports Night drought, we have West Wing to turn
to. I just hope he doesn't burn out.

My all time favorite Sorkinese quote has got to be from "The American
President, "My name is Andrew Shepard and I AM the President."
(The President finally spoke out over "Sydney-Gate" in response to Bob
Rumpsen's line, "My name is Bob Rumpsen and I'm running for President.")

Of course, who can forget the HUGE quote, "You can't HANDLE the TRUTH!" (Do
I even have to mention WHO said that?)

When I wrote to him (snail mail), asking to buy copies of SN episodes I
included my email address and my phone number. He emailed me to ask which
episodes I was missing.

Since then I have tried to email him only when I have something intelligent
to say, so as you can imagine, it hasn't been that often. But he almost
always replies. I think he is very nice.

He seems so far to be such a nice person. How did you get his e-mail
address? I love the responses he has sent us. He's funny even on no sleep!
By the way, having WW to watch has been nice, even though we're missing SN
so much (and it seems like forever until Dec. 7). Catching on to his
Sorkinese at least makes the time wait less painful.

Well, this is kind of exciting. I guess you wanted to try this out and see
how much interest there is in an AS list.

I am certainly a big fan. After getting into SN I found that he was the
writer of American President, A Few Good Men and Malice (a guily pleasure of
mine).

When I couldn't get all the episodes of SN I wrote to Jamie Tarses and Aaron
Sorkin at ABC. Aaron emailed me back and provided me with copies of 5
episodes.

I really enjoy his writing. While SN is my favorite show, I thoroughly enjoy
West Wing.
